  • Little Wandle (Phonics)

At Newhall Infant and Nursery School, we know that for all our children to become confident, fluent readers and writers, phonics needs to be taught through a clear, structured programme 📖✨

To ensure we are using the most up-to-date and effective approach, we introduced a new phonics scheme in September 2022.

We now use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to carefully plan and deliver daily, fun and engaging phonics lessons 🎉🔤

    🔤 What is phonics?

    In phonics, children learn that:

    • Letters represent specific sounds 🔊
    • Sounds can be blended together to make words 🧩
    • There are different combinations of sounds they will see when reading and writing 📚✏️

Our teaching begins in Early Years and follows a carefully planned sequence, helping children build on their knowledge step by step as they move through school 🪜🌟

    🗣️ The importance of pronunciation

When supporting your child at home, correct pronunciation is really important.

It’s vital that we use pure sounds and avoid adding an extra ‘uh’ sound. For example:

    • ❌ “muh”
    • ✅ “mmm”

This helps children blend sounds together more easily when reading 🧠💡
